Gender Differences in Perceived Risks and Benefits of Quitting Smoking among Korean Americans
نویسنده
چکیده
Background: This study examined gender differences in perceived risks and benefits of quitting smoking among Korean Americans who are known for high rates of smoking. Methods: This is a secondary data analysis of two research studies: a smoking cessation intervention study and a telephone survey on factors associated with quit intention. Results: Women perceived greater risks and greater benefits of quitting smoking than men. Men or individuals who perceived lower risks or greater benefits of quitting smoking were more likely to have a quit intention than their respective counterparts. The relationship between the benefits and quit intention was two times stronger for men than for women. Conclusion: Korean Americans are more willing to quit smoking if they are men or perceive lower risks or greater benefits of quitting smoking. The relationship between the benefits and quit intention is much stronger for men than for women. These findings suggest that smoking cessation intervention for Korean Americans should focus on alleviating perceived risks of quitting smoking, whereas facilitating perceived benefits of quitting smoking. However, the latter approach may be less effective for women compared to men.

However, because women tend...
